I worked with a cross-disciplinary team to provide feature recommendations that improve the accessibility of the Microsoft Teams virtual collaboration platform. We focused on improving the experience of videoconferencing for people with cognitive executive dysfunction.
Individuals with executive dysfunction are susceptible to distraction, disorientation, and often have trouble organizing thoughts and incoming information. As a result, they can have greater difficulty engaging in remote meetings and classes as they attempt to navigate their digital environment, process information, and keep track of important details.
We have proposed a set of features for Microsoft Teams to empower individuals to focus, refocus, and engage in virtual settings.
The expandable OneNote Tags menu appears right by the selected text, which is convenient, efficient, and keeps the focus on the content instead of having to navigate to other areas of the screen.
With the live transcript acting as the user's own personal scribe, falling behind as they attempt to take notes detailed enough to be useful is a thing of the past. Let it know when something's relevant and you'll have the report on your desk(top) by the end of the meeting.
The names and times associated with highlighted and tagged text is exported to OneNote along with the content.
Meeting notes become structured and scannable, making it easier to follow up after the meeting with additional thoughts and identify action items.

Note where there are breaks in conversation, in the meeting, or when you get distracted.

This challenge called for us to create personas and user stories to build empathy with stakeholders and inform design recommendations for accessibility features.

The pandemic has exposed many challenges of learning and working remotely, especially impacting people with disabilities. We were asked to focus on a core user group and develop accessibility features to improve one of Microsofts collaboration tools.
We focused on individuals with executive dysfunction based on the following information, and selected Microsoft Teams due to the prevalence of virtual lectures and meetings.
The pandemic introduced a new set of executive functioning challenges for individuals living with anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress, burnout, over-stimulating environments, lack of sleep, etc. While digital and virtual tools have the potential to help people with disabilities, many are not designed to prioritize inclusivity or recognize the subtle challenges faced by people with executive dysfunction disorders.
While executive dysfunction disorders and attention dysregulation disorders (e.g., ADHD) are closely linked, people outside of these groups can experience symptoms associated with executive dysfunction and/or ADHD, such as:
Specific challenges, and the degree to which they are experienced, may vary based on the individual and the nature of the disability, be it permanent, temporary, or situational.
We created two personas: Michael, with ADHD (permanent), and Katherine, newly experiencing executive dysfunction brought on the stress of the pandemic and working from home with family (temporary).
Their challenges may be experienced by others in certain situations (e.g., someone having trouble due to external distractions, like a crying baby or noisy neighbor).
Michael is particularly prone to cognitive overload, which is further complicated by his distractibility. Disability: Permanent

Solution
Use markers to segment recordings and organize transcripts for notes (features 4 & 5)
Transcripts and recordings are easier to navigate --> easier to recover from lost focus (harm reduction; reduces negative impact of inevitable distractions (due to symptoms or situation))
Brief descriptions and keywords can be used to help offload thoughts and ideas --> decreases need for detailed notes and outside navigation --> quickly revisit content to trigger memory
Easy to skip to specific moment and find relevant content --> saves time, frustration, and reduces potential distractions involved when searching for specific moment

This is intended to be an unobtrusive, collapsible text box for keywords and quick descriptions. The timing should be noted automatically, and including these markers when exporting to OneNote should be an option.
Note the small gaps in the play bar corresponding with times. Clearer indicators of the segments should also be explored, as the ones shown here may not be visible for many users.
Hovering over the gaps or tags should highlight the corresponding meeting marker text or transcript text, and vice versa.
